Woman’s body found after flash flood at Buchan campground subsides

A woman’s body has been found at a campground in regional Victoria after it was hit by flash flooding on Boxing Day.

Emergency workers were called to the Buchan campground on Cave Rd in East Gippsland just after 5pm on Tuesday after it went underwater.

A number of cars were submerged in the area and police had to rescue multiple people from a nearby bridge.

But as the flood water receded and police conducted a search of the area, they made the grim find.

A woman, who is yet to be formally identified, was found deceased in the search area about 6.45pm.

Earlier on Tuesday, a man was killed when a branch fell on his property at Caringal.

“Emergency services provided medical assistance however the 44-year-old Bunyip man died at the scene,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

The state continued to be battered by thunderstorms and remained on flood watch on Boxing Day after a wet Christmas.

The State Emergency Service responded to more than 1000 assistance requests over three days.

Most of the calls came from Frankston, Shepparton, Bendigo and the state’s west.

But the focus was expected to shift to the east, with a number of flood warnings issued, SES state agency commander Alistair Drayton said.

Downed trees, particularly across roads, as well as water entering houses made up a large number of the calls.
