Thursday’s Powerball jackpot soars to $100 million as the biggest winners are revealed

Half of all adults across the country are expected to take a chance on the eye-watering $100 million Powerball jackpot next week.

If a single person takes the pool, they’ll become the equal second-biggest winner in the nation’s Powerball history.

The winning numbers for draw 1444 will be revealed here at 8.30pm AEDT on Thursday January 18, an hour after entries close.

The $100 million prize has only been offered eight times in the game’s 28-year history, and only twice have individual players scored the whole thing for themselves.

The prize was won undivided in June last year, when a Bankstown dad scored the $100 million prize for himself — but he was not alone in spending the winnings.

His wife challenged his initial response that he would continue working.

“Working? We’re multi-millionaires now!” she said during a call with The Lott at the time. “We’re going to buy a new house and set ourselves up for the future.”

A Sydney mother and nurse in her 40s was the first-ever person to make history by winning the $100 million Powerball prize after she bought her ticket in January 2019, just before entries closed, “for a bit of a giggle”.

She spent the winnings on “a lovely house” and admitted her taste in wine had improved as a result when she last spoke to the Lott.

But she otherwise maintained her humble roots, opting to pay-it-forward where possible, and support her family and friends who, she said, “need me to be the person I always was”.

Since then, the jackpot has twice soared even higher, to $150 million in September 2019 and $160 million in October 2022, but was both times shared by three division one winning entrants.

There is still room for a record-breaking win in 2024 though — if a single winner emerges in Western Australia, they’ll be the biggest Powerball winner the state has ever seen.

The state’s largest win so far, $80 million, was scored by an unofficial syndicate comprised of 55 women from the ladies-only gym Curves, who each chucked just $5 into the kitty.

The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said: “Could Powerball welcome its first division one winner for 2024 next week if someone scoops the entire pool and wins $100 million? Only time will tell.”

“The holiday of a lifetime, immediate retirement, your perfect home and all your other dreams could be a reality.”
