Driver fighting for life after hitting tree in regional NSW

A 73-year-old man has been flown in a critical condition to hospital in Sydney after smashing his car into a tree in the NSW Central West.

The single-vehicle crash happened on the Mitchell Hwy in Shadforth, about 15km south of Orange, about 4.15pm on Thursday.

NSW Police were told the vehicle left the road before hitting a tree.

They said the driver was trapped for a short time before he was treated on scene by paramedics.

He was later airlifted from Orange Hospital to Westmead Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police are continuing to investigate.
